2010 SERAC Regional Recognition Award
This year, SERAC would like to recognize an individual who has contributed their time and energy to reducing the impact of alcohol and drug use in their town, among youth.
Christopher Sandford of North Stonington School System helped develop a new local coalition, PHIT (Positive Health In Teens). Chris is also a new member of the Board of Directors at SERAC, helping to expand our organization and capacity. With his understanding and dedication to both the regional and local coalition efforts, substance abuse prevention efforts will only continue to grow! Thanks Chris!!
Coalition Acknowledgements
We would like to acknowledge the hard work of new or newly reorganized coalitions in Southeastern CT during the 2009-2010 year: Positive Health In Teens (North Stonington), Stonington Prevention Council, YouthFirst (Colchester), and the Norwich Prevention Council. Thank you for your hard work and dedication.
Employee Acknowledgements
Special thanks to Rayallen Bergman for three years of work at SERAC. Rayallen worked very closely with the college population and youth-relate prevention. He also gained a strong interest in gambling awareness and represented SERAC with those initiatives. Ray was a valuable member of the team and he will be missed.
Welcome Stephanie Smiley Spargo! Stephanie had been with us last year but recently became full time as our Program Coordinator. Not only will she be coordinating our monthly and quarterly events, she will also begin to work with some of our towns and their prevention coalitions. We are very excited to have her on board!
Town Highlights
- Lyme/ Old Lyme received a Best Practice Grant from the NL Child and Family Agency. The coalition was the driving in initiating a new school policy to begin using breathalyzer.
- In Franklin, SERAC has begun working with the Janet Carlson Calvert Library
- Griswold Youth Services provided security camera and "Smoke and Drug Free" signage at the local skate park.
- Four agencies had staff trained in the Girls Circle Curriculum (East Lyme, UCFS, SERAC, MYSB). In the Fall, each with facilitate the program in their agencies.
- Montville had a very successful billboard campaign using pictures from a spring Mock Crash at the high school.
- Five libraries in the region were given $800 worth of books and materials to enhance their prevention, addiction and teen-related sections.
- Voluntown hosted a national speaker, Keith Kenyon, from the American Athletic Instititute.
- Bozrah implemented the Second Step Curriculum using their Local Prevention Council.
